Renault engine prototype designed for additive manufacturing
Company & Department:
Renault Trucks, Lyon Powertrain Engineering Department
Project & Product:
using metal additive manufacturing as a future engine manufacturing process, for engine prototype DTI 5 4-cylinder Euro-6 Step C Engine
Approach:
engine prototype is exclusively designed for additive manufacturing (DfAM), with the aim to reduce the weight and size
Benefits:
Weight reduce by 25% or 120Kg
Component number reduced by 25% or 200 fewer parts
Preliminary Validation:
Engine rocker arms and camshaft bearing caps were manufactured by metal additive manufacturing
Above parts were successfully bench-tested for 600hours inside a Euro-6 engine
Suggestions:
Priliminary test proved the durability of engine components made using metal additive manufacturing
Design for additive manufacturing allows engineers to optimize the size of parts, reduce the number of component number in an engine and therefore the assembly operations (resulting in lighter and more functional and optimal performance for the engines of tomorrow)
